![]() The story is told in a three line rhyme that never falters and always end in the fourth line"All are welcome here" and no, it won't take kids long to begin chiming in on that line. ![]() ![]() School here becomes what school should be everywhere: "We're part of a community/Our strength is our diversity/A shelter from adversity/All are welcome here." Besides cultural diversity, there is a blind student and one on a wheelchair, and there are a variety of families: single parents, moms and dads, two moms, two dads, and mixed race parents. Even their lunches reflect their heritage and who they are. Inside, kids spend their day getting to know each other and learning about their different cultural backgrounds through music, art, and stories. ![]() It's the first day of school and the endpapers of this lovely book show a large group of wonderfully diverse kids and their parents/caregivers walking to a school with a big "All Are Welcome" banner across the entrance. ![]() 6/7/2023 0 Comments Dark places and sharp objects![]() ![]() ![]() As Camille’s suspicions about Adora intensify, she seeks solace at a bar on the outskirts of town, and when she finds a drunken John Keene there, he begs her to believe that he had nothing to do with Natalie’s murder. ![]() As rumors that John and Natalie were close in an “unhealthy” way and it is revealed that John has no alibi for the night of Natalie’s murder, pressure mounts, and John becomes even more emotional and withdrawn. It's in the long, intense glances at the dinner table, the way we'll brush up against each other in the halls, the rare glimpses of the man deep inside, like the sun passing through clouds.īut no matter how I feel about him, we can never be together. His chiseled face and sexual swagger are only part of the package. ![]() Yet the longer I share these palace walls with this man, the more that I'm drawn to him. Adjusting to my new life isn't easy but the hardest part hasn't been the girls who still grieve over the loss of their mother.Ĭold, mysterious, and moody, with an icy stare that seems to penetrate your soul, King Aksel may have hired me to take care of his daughters but he wants as little to do with me as possible. And my new home? The royal palace in Copenhagen. Their father is the widowed King of Denmark. Now I'm the new nanny for two adorable little girls who happen to be princesses. ![]() Then I got the job and found out how wrong I was. The beautiful nanny he's hired to raise them. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments The New Path by Kriyananda![]() ![]() I am very disappointed with all of the audios I purchased by him. I couldn't take any more of his breathy/breathless fake-silky-sweet cooing. Like the other reviewer, I finally had to give up. He loves to go on and on about himself, and throws in a lot of his opinions on everything, with no references to Yogananda the whole part I listened to. ![]() In the first few minutes of this book, Kriyananda talks about how he was going to talk about Yogananda, and how this book could really be seen as a 'continuation' to "Autobiography of a Yogi" (I couldn't believe the ego! For him to place his work in the same category as Yogananda's is so laughable it's beyond ridiculous!) Then he goes on spending the next few hours talking only about himself, down to the smallest details of his childhood - incredibly boring to listen to, and I doubt anyone cares about his little imaginings unless they are one of his followers. Awful! Grandiose, loves to listen to himself talk ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She hovers just past the edge of comfort she is willing to push the knife in deeper, inch by inch. By the time we reach this phrase in the final essay, the wrenching “Grand Unified Theory of Female Pain”, we are fully aware that Jamison does dwell in wounds, but not quite in the way her boyfriend was suggesting. ![]() When Jamison is told by a boyfriend that she is a “wound dweller”, the implication is that she is a self-pitying wallower, forever picking at scabs. And, in the astonishing title essay, perhaps something approaching a combination of the two, when Jamison works as a medical actor at a teaching hospital, internalising the pain of fictional patients and weaving their narratives with her own. Her own – a heart condition, an abortion, struggles with alcohol, a violent attack on a darkened street – or that of others, such as sufferers of Morgellons, a disease that many doctors dismiss as psychosomatic or a trio of boys wrongfully imprisoned for decades. The 11 essays in Leslie Jamison’s extraordinary new collection, The Empathy Exams, are about pain. ![]() 6/5/2023 0 Comments Wonder woman warbringer![]() Young Prince Loki knows he’s not his father’s favorite. If there’s any writer who could do justice to the utter queer chaos that is Loki, it’s Lee. Still, I’ll read anything by a favorite author (I read Leigh Bardugo’s Wonder Woman: Warbringeras well), and matching Mackenzi Lee with Loki was clearly brilliant. Why reshape well-known characters to fit a format they’re not designed for? Why take writers at the top of their game away from original fiction? It can work, but I haven’t exactly been seeking these books out. I’m not entirely convinced by the recent trend of comic book characters being adapted to novel form by the top YA writers. I didn’t know that she’d written a new book until one day at work I rung a customer who was purchasing Loki: Where Mischief Lies. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtueis a perfect mix of silly, snarky, stirring, and sweet. Mackenzi Lee is one of my favorite authors. ![]() ![]() “My first Keith Finney read and I am hooked.
